Almost a perfect day for tubing, light breeze and rising fish, at least for the early part of the day till the sun got too bright. Clive managed to catch his first fish in 7 years of sea fishing and obviously his first on the fly and from a tube! A good 3 to 4 lbs rainbow.
The river is in a bad way ,we desperately need lots of rain.
Everything is clogged up with weed but if you wanted to know where your E.A. licence money goes - then this is a clue , vital river maintenance.
John has been salmon fishing for a few years now but wanted to improve his Spey casting. First I did an analysis of his current technique and style and then systematically introduced a series of changes to achieve the objectives.
Great credit to John he adapted and changed things very quickly and so the improvements were accepted readily. In our half day lesson we covered the basic roll cast followed by the double and single Spey in addition to a snap T and snake roll. So John is now much better equipped to handle all weather variations and fishing conditions and was casting very very well. A bit more personal practise and job done! Great lesson!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1692947813119783593.post-26941872698069264942013-02-13T17:18:00.001+00:002013-02-13T17:18:41.827+00:00Not beaten just weather beaten! All things return to normal (whatever that feels like!) tomorrow with hopefully better weather. Lessons booked in for a few days now. At the fishery on Thursday then on the Ribble Friday doing a Spey lesson. Like it or not we generally follow what's happening in the states and the main supplier in the USA has just done a deal with Orvis to retail it's Tenkara products. So at least there Tenkara is approaching mainstream? Will it happen here who knows but what I do know is that Tenkara has definitely allowed me to catch fish that I am certain I would not have done with Western tackle. Will I give up the western stuff, hell no! But I will be using Tenkara whenever I feel it is the best approach in the given conditions.

Had a great day yesterday with John Burrows from Manchester and today another beginners lesson with Mike Battersby.

Good to see there are still plenty of people wanting to learn this great sport of ours.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1692947813119783593.post-79969589122149493132012-05-16T09:16:00.003+01:002012-05-16T09:16:46.217+01:00LessonsI have had a good few sessions on the Ribble recently but now it's back to stillwater techniques and beginners.
Today I have a full day lesson in which we look at tackle, leaders, knots, fly selection and basic entomology. Then we move onto casting - both the overhead and the roll cast with variations. Then we switch over to fishing tactics and watercraft and then some fishing, hopefully pulling out a fish or two.
Looking forward to it as always.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1692947813119783593.post-68539888553673826762012-05-13T11:02:00.001+01:002012-05-13T11:02:34.676+01:00EntomologyHad a great day yesterday with a group of fly fishers at the Freshwater Biological Association HQ near Windermere doing the first part of an emtomology course. Really useful especially looking at all the main aquatic species under a good microscope. Can't wait for part two in a few weeks time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1692947813119783593.post-71763719669913172572012-05-04T17:31:00.004+01:002012-05-04T17:31:57.871+01:00Friday 4th MayGreat lesson today with Sean Conner from Accrington. Sean was a relative beginner to fly fishing and came to see me to primarily help him with his casting technique but also with general fly fishing knowledge and tactics.

We had a good day and Sean's casting was pretty much on the money, in fact he took to it as good as anyone I have taught before a bit of arm fatigue set in.

Everyone, no matter how experienced or at what level needs to practise their casting technique but as soon as the first signs of tiredness show, you need to rest. It is a better idea to practise in short sessions of about 20 mins with rest intervals to really make lasting improvements.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
